Have you ever felt stuck in a loop with your health, trying everything but not seeing the results you hoped for? I’ve been there too. In Episode 11 of my podcast, I share some pivotal mistakes I made earlier in my career, with the hope that my journey can illuminate your path to better health. Let’s dive into these lessons learned and how they can help you on your journey to gut health and overall wellness.
Mistake #1: Not Running a Comprehensive Stool Test or Checking Hormones
In the early days of my career as a Nutrition Therapy Practitioner (NTP), I wasn't trained to run functional tests. Instead, I used methods like lingual neural testing, which involves placing supplements on a client's tongue and observing the body's response. While useful, this method has its limitations. It doesn’t provide the broad set of data that comprehensive stool tests and hormone checks offer. These tests are crucial for getting more tangible data needed to understand root cause factors driving complex health issues like mold toxicity and gut pathogens.
Lesson Learned: Running comprehensive stool tests and checking hormone levels provide critical insights into the underlying issues affecting gut health and overall wellness. This approach allows for more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatment plans.
Mistake #2: Not Creating a Comprehensive Library of Nutritional Resources
Initially, I found myself repeatedly giving the same nutritional guidance and education to clients, no matter which chronic health struggles they were having. Over time, I realized the importance of having a structured, step-by-step educational resource library. This was a resource I built as part of my program work, and it allows clients to grow their knowledge incrementally and make informed dietary changes with confidence. Today, I offer my online educational and resource-based library alongside personalized one-on-one coaching to ensure my clients have the support they need.
Lesson Learned: Having a comprehensive library of nutritional resources empowers clients to learn and apply nutritional knowledge effectively. It also ensures they have access to consistent and accurate information tailored to their needs.
Mistake #3: Not Requiring a Commitment to a Three-Month Program
Early in my career, I didn't set clear expectations for clients for a realistic duration of the healing process. I learned that true healing, especially when addressing gut health, requires a commitment of at least three months. This timeframe allows us to work with diet changes incrementally, run tests, interpret results, and implement effective strategies. It also provides enough time for clients to see significant improvements and feel motivated to continue their journey.
Lesson Learned: Setting a three-month commitment for clients provides a realistic timeframe for healing and ensures they stay engaged in their health journey long enough to see meaningful results.
Mistake #4: Not Addressing Stress and Trauma
Many clients I’ve worked with have had underlying stress and trauma that is affecting their physical health. Over the years, I've come to understand the importance of addressing these emotional and psychological factors. By incorporating stress management techniques and tools to support regulating the nervous system, I have helped more clients achieve holistic wellness.
Lesson Learned: Addressing stress and trauma is essential for holistic health. Incorporating stress management and emotional regulation techniques into treatment plans can significantly improve overall well-being.
