You feel constantly preoccupied with how crappy you feel. You’re bloated. You’re tired. You have to schedule leaving your house around needing to use the bathroom. You don’t have the same focus and concentration you used to. You’re wondering what the best cleanse is to solve all of these issues fast.
Sound familiar?
I get it. That was me too at one point. You want to feel better, so maybe you try the next big diet trend. Maybe it’s an elimination diet. And for a while, you do feel better.
It’s a win, right?
Well, not quite.
Here’s the common pitfall I see over and over again (that I also discuss in Episode 22 of my podcast on Spotify and You Tube): you do sometimes feel better after a cleanse. You often do feel great while on the restrictive diet. But, here’s the thing: the moment you go off the cleanse, or try to reintroduce foods, those initial problems come creeping back.
But here’s the truth: these cleanses and elimination diets, while sometimes therapeutic in the short term, don’t address the real root causes.
Sure, cutting out certain foods can make the symptoms disappear temporarily. But what’s really going on under the surface? Are we solving the underlying issues that are driving these food sensitivities in the first place?
More often than not, I see that people need more than just diet change. They might have an underlying gut infection, imbalanced digestive enzymes, or poor stomach acid production that needs to be addressed. There are often other driving factors to chronic gut issues.
Are food sensitivity tests worth it?
You might be contemplating doing a food sensitivity test. Or maybe you’ve already done one, either on your own or through a functional practitioner. These are the tests that give you a color-coded list of foods, telling you what to avoid and what to eat. It sounds like a great, straightforward solution.
But here's the kicker—many of these tests flag foods not because you’re truly sensitive to them, but because you’ve been eating them regularly! So, you're handed this restrictive list and told to stick to it, without anyone investigating why your body is reacting to these foods in the first place.
And then what happens? You end up on a rotating carousel of food sensitivity tests and new lists of foods to avoid every few months, without ever addressing the root of the problem.
It’s frustrating, and unsustainable. Here’s the thing: real healing requires a personalized and holistic approach. We need to look beyond the food lists and figure out what’s happening with your digestion, your gut microbiome, and your overall health.
In my world, it’s important to answer the following questions for my clients. Are you producing enough stomach acid? Are you making enough digestive enzymes? Are there deeper issues, like gut infections, that are keeping you stuck in this cycle?
Can nerves impact your digestive system?
Another big factor driving chronic gut issues, that is often overlooked in the healing process, is your nervous system.
When you’re battling chronic illness or gut issues, your body can get stuck in a constant state of fight or flight. And here’s the hard truth—nothing is going to fully improve until you teach your body and nervous system how to feel safe again.
It sounds simple, but it does take strategy and a willingness to retrain the nervous system.
This is a key part of my process with clients, and it’s one of the reasons I’m trained in Heartmath—a powerful tool to help regulate your nervous system. Is it a magic cure for everything? No. But it can help get you started on the right track to support healing the physical body.
So, what is the fastest way to reset your gut?
The truth is, there is no "fast" shortcut to fixing the gut. In fact, I've seen people pursuing these false promises take even longer to fix their gut issues than if they would have just hired an expert to help guide them.
Even as health practitioners, we don’t fix our health issues alone. This is something my nutrition colleague and friend Abby Vallejo and I spoke about on Episode 22 of my podcast (listen on Spotify or You Tube). We both acknowledge that know a lot about the body, the gut, and the science behind healing, but when it comes to our own health, we still turn to others for guidance. We all have blind spots, and you can’t see what you don’t know.
Ladies, newsflash: we’re not meant to do it all alone—in health, in life, or anywhere else. A coach needs a coach. A doctor needs a doctor. We all need someone who can help us see where things aren’t aligning, where we have gaps in our knowledge, and how to move forward with clarity and confidence.
